Calypso new policy of licensing

From 31 March 2011, the license fees are not charged on terminals anymore, enabling all terminal manufacturers to provide Calypso terminals by integrating a Calypso SAM in their equipment. From this date, the Calypso license fee is integrated in the cost of the SAM.The total cost (terminal + SAM) will be lower than the present cost, since thelicense fee charged on the SAM will be lower to the previous one charged on terminals.

Until this date  a terminal manufacturer wanting to commercialise Calypso equipment, has to sign aCalypso license. This process is somewhat complex and may be difficult tomanage, given the large number of manufacturers in this field, and the time necessary to conclude such license.

This process is slowing down the large and global diffusion of the Calypsospecification, CNA consequently asked Innovatron to study a new and easier wayto manage the license policy.

The solution proposed, on a joint agreement between CNA and Innovatron, is to transfer thelicense fees from the terminal equipment to the SAM (Secure ApplicationModule) which is necessarily present in Calypso terminals.

The Calypso SAM-C1specification is under the responsibility of CNA. Presently, two SAM providershave realized SAM products to manage Calypso card:

-       SPIRTECH (http://www.spirtech.com)is the main Calypso SAM manufacturer and provides the SAM-S1 E, which isdirectly based on the CNA specification SAM-C1 and available on componentsissued by two different manufacturers (STM and Infineon).

-       ASK (http://www.ask-rfid.com)is an alternative provider and supplies the CSAMcompatiblewith Calypso cards but which specification is not under CNA responsibility. The CSAM isavailable on an STM component.

From 31 March 2011, the license fees are not charged on terminals anymore, enabling all terminal manufacturersto provide Calypso terminals by integrating a Calypso SAM in their equipment. From this date, the Calypso license fee is integrated in the cost of the SAM.The total cost (terminal + SAM) will be lower than the present cost, since thelicense fee charged on the SAM will be lower to the previous one charged onterminals.

The license fee on Calypso SAMs is 5 euros instead of about 8 euros (the average license fee for aterminal).

This new way tomanage the Calypso license will facilitate the expansion of Calypso in manycountries where, until now, the previous conditions required terminalmanufacturers to sign a license.

From 31 March 2011, the onlynecessary requirement to implement the Calypso specifications is to manage aCalypso SAM in their equipment.
